During the memorial service—with the clinking of glasses and the quiet accompaniment of mourning music—something begins. Instead of a calm farewell, glimpses from the life of the deceased unfold.

Through the waiter’s incidental gestures, through subtle combinations of music, words, and objects, she is brought back to life in the guests’ imaginations.

Intoxicated by the wine, they begin to live in the past—until they themselves become characters in the story of Anna Karenina.

Cabaret of Russian Realism builds and sets the drama with lively, visceral, and original music rooted in Russian traditions.

Harmonica, percussion, violin, cello, bass, and five voices create a metamorphosis of music and theatre, cabaret and intimate scenes with animated objects. The rhythm intensifies all the way to the final moment—where, right at death’s door, both audience and actors suddenly find themselves back at the beginning: at the table, with a glass of wine in hand.
